Hong Kong Art School Higher Diploma in Fine Art Lecturer’s Exhibition —— Git • Gaai

This year, we see neither new students of Higher Diploma in Fine Art programme nor our familiar teachers; it is as if you have all vanished into a "Git-gaai." In local culture, the term Git-gaai is interpreted as a surreal, supernatural space, often associated with urban legends of disorienting and mysterious disappearances. In everyday conversation, it has become a playful slang, having drifted far from its original Buddhist meaning—a sacred boundary for a monastic community to practice, shielded from outside distractions.

Driven by curiosity about our teachers’ experiences within this specific time and space, we decided to step into the Git-gaai for a visit. Through our dialogues, we perceived another hidden layer of the Git-gaai within art education—the predefined relationships dictated by our roles. It led us to question how these unseen borders influence the way knowledge flows between us.

Therefore, we have invited our teachers to exhibit a work that best represents their most “defiant” side: they chose their own vision over traditional instruction. We also invite past, present, and future students to join the conversation, together exploring and practicing the possibility of being equals.

Reinterpreting the manifold meanings of "Git • Gaai" within the Hong Kong Art School: This is a gathering, but more importantly, a collective transgression of inherent boundaries.
